Designing Digital Sound & Video

"This course introduces students to the principles of designing time-based multi-modal communication in a social context. Students will analyse, design, and produce video for use in a variety of digital platforms, including e-learning and business applications."

Designing Digital Sound and Video is a course in which I demonstrated my ability to direct and work with a small team of individuals with difficult schedules. With the groups decided at the beginning, the Professor assigned a number of small assignments and three major projects throughout the term. Projects would be marked on their originality, their use of techniques discussed in class, and artistic merit.

The first assignment is a very short scene and to film it in two different 'moods'. One would be very 'active', featuring closeups and jumpcuts, and the other more 'passive', with longer camera motions and softer focus.

The second assignment is a submission to the Weird Blame Contest held by the Canadian Campus Retail Associates. The video highlights strange comparisons that should not be made when comparing the post-secondary bookstores to other industries, but often are made anyways.

The third major assignment is a full narrative, and all efforts were made to tell a story effectively with the use of film. This last project was the most open-ended, we were given much more creative freedom with the subject and length of the project. Like our other two projects, we designed this video with an emphasis away from dialogue.
