Being Linked In and Online

I'm a big fan of LinkedIn, even though some of the new features are not quite working right. The integration with Monster breaks every time I try to use it and I can't frankly tell if that's a problem in the code for LinkedIn or Monster, but what I can say is that LinkedIn has figured out and targeted the core of business networking perfectly.

Below I have a screenshot from my 'Recommendations' section, where coworkers and supervisors can leave their opinions and impressions of my work. It's a great way for new employers on LinkedIn to get an idea of who they're thinking of hiring. In fact, my only personal issue with the implementation is that the company needs a presence on LinkedIn in order to be able to review or leave recommendations, though I can see why it was done this way. There are still many companies with very little web presence, and even some companies with absolutely none at all.

I personally would like to invite companies that have not looked seriously into the web to reconsider it. When talking with representatives from local companies with online systems such as http://doctorprofitinc.com/ or http://greenlawncanada.trugreen.ca/, I was informed that metrics show about 1/2 of sales are initiated or completed electronically. So half of their income is likely go elsewhere to another company if they did not have these websites.

Companies can get so many other benefits from a web presence. If a position opens in a company they can get on LinkedIn and look through related profiles for the best employees for the position.

Just as many companies continued to ignore the telephone and yellowpages after its invention, people who have been in the business for a very long time are convinced that they can handle business as usual without innovating product or at least adapting to the new business scenarios. Its a real shame, but just as several reputable companies fall, several new ones make fortunes by leveraging the new technologies of social media, mobile apps and guerrilla marketing.

As for me, I'm on LinkedIn. I find that my LinkedIn page is usually one of the first pages to come up in a search if someone searches for 'Adam Lunde'. It does come in behind my personal site here and my GPlus account, so I must be doing something right! Now I just need to find out why Canada411's entry comes up so high, and with an old address at 21 Krug St Kitchener, ON N2H2X4.

UPDATE: It seems some people are leaving LinkedIn over privacy concerns and I've already noticed that one of my references has chosen to leave, and apparently LinkedIn is in fact responsible enough to actually delete their old data. As I've said before to many a friend, if you wouldn't say it in a moderate voice in a quiet classroom or workplace, it's probably not to be shared on a social networking site. With that said, I am down at least one recommendation and before I update the image above, I plan to wait a few months to see if more people migrate or if this is a one-time thing
